Lenovo Computer Won't Connect to the Internet After Sleep Mode

Posted on 12:45 by Unknown

Windows 7 may fail to connect to the Internet after being in sleep mode for any number of reasons. The issue could be with the computer's hardware, the operating system or the router that connects your computer to the modem and the Internet. In most cases, the steps required to fix your computer will require an internet connection, although you can do some without. If you're using a wireless connection, make sure you try connecting with a cable as well. In many cases, a wired connection will work when a wireless connection won't.

Instructions

1.     Configure Your Network Adapters

Expand the Start Menu and type "Device Manager" in to the Start Search. Select "Network Adapters."
Right click on "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties."
Uncheck the box for "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)."
Select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click the Properties button below it. A new dialogue window will open.
Ensure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are both selected. Click "OK."
Find the button labeled "Configure..." and click on it. The Local Area Connection, Properties window will close and a new one will open.
Navigate to the "Drivers" tab and click on "Update Driver." If you currently have an Internet connection, this will automatically connect to Microsoft's database of drivers. It will download and install the latest version, if any exist. When it's finished, click "OK." If the computer asks you to reboot, click "No" and manually reboot later when you've completed these instructions.
Repeat for any other connections you have, such as wireless connections or secondary LAN connections.

2.     Configure WLAN Settings

Click on the Start Menu and select "Run." Type in "services" and press enter. This opens the Services window.
At the bottom of the list, find "WLAN AutoConfig" and right click on it. Select "Properties."
Set the Startup type to "Automatic" and click "Start." Press "OK" and close the Services window.

3.     Configure Your Router

Navigate to your router's setup page if you have one. In most cases, you can access the setup page by typing the following into your web browser: "//192.168.0.1" and pressing "Enter."
At the very top of your router's setup page should be a drop-down. Make sure it is set to "PPoE" and in the options below it "Keep Alive" is selected. Save any changes. For this setting to work, you may need to contact your ISP about setting your modem to accept the router's attempts to connect.
Locate the Wireless Security page if you have DSL, which is indicated by a phone plug. If you are using WPA2 security, make sure the WPA Algorithm is set to "TKIP+AES." Again, save any changes. Look at where your setup connects to the wall. If the plug is a round cable like the kind that connects to your TV, you can skip this step.

Intel WiFi/WiMAX 5150: HOTKEY doesn't work without Access Connections

Posted on 12:32 by Unknown

Our company has several T410i 2522-P38 notebooks with Intel 5150 WiFi/WiMAX cards, all still running XP. Recently I had to reinstall OS on one machine. There was a minor problem that Lenovo support site download page for this machine offers Intel WiMAX 6205 instead of 5150, but I have driver package stored. However, after installing OS, drivers and Lenovo packages I've found that in Fn+F5 window I see only Bluetooth adapter, WiFi and WiMAX don't appear, yet they are correctly shown in Device Manager and WiFi works (couldn't check WiMAX).

This is not first time I face such problem, so I tried to solve it in usual way: uninstalled and reinstalled Hotkey package and drivers (Power Management driver and WiFi), tried several different versions of drivers and Hotkey - all to no success. Whatever I was doing, only BT was seen in Fn+F5.

Finally I ended up reverse-engineering Hotkey, and got quite unexpected result: it simply doesn't know WiFi driver present on the notebook. Hotkey package (namely, TpFnF5.exe file which creates Fn+F5 window) has a hard-coded list of known adpater Hardware IDs. Intel WiFi Link 5150 present on the notebook has ID VEN_8086&DEV_423D&SUBSYS_13168086, while closest match in the list was VEN_8086&DEV_423D&SUBSYS_13118086. As an experiment, I've patched TpFnF5.exe to replace "13118086" with "13168086", and voila - WiFi appears in Fn+F5, and can be switched on and off! I've checked TpFnF5.exe from several different versions of Hotkey package, and Hardware ID of our adapter wasn't present anywhere.

Ok, the reason is found, but how all other identical machines work?! I checked another notebook, and found the difference: it had Access Connections installed, while the troubled machine had only Hotkey but not AC. It turns out that Access Connections has it's own executable for Fn+F5 dialog, AcFnF5.exe. When you press Fn+F5 with AC installed, AcFnF5.exe is launched instead of TpFnF5.exe which is called when you have only Hotkey. And AcFnF5.exe knows how to handle our adapter. I've installed AC on troubled notebook, and Fn+F5 window immediately showed all three adapters.

Troubleshooting Lenovo Laptop Wireless Connections

Posted on 12:55 by Unknown

Note that these steps correspond with decision points on the flowchart and are reached through the interactive diamond symbols. The text below cannot be read sequentially.

Does the laptop software see the wireless network? Does the laptop operating system software see the wireless network you are trying to connect to? Many notebooks come equipped with a special manufacturer's configuration utility, such as lenovo's ConfigFree, in addition to standard OS connectivity software, like the "View Available Wireless Networks" option in modern Windows versions. In addition, there should be a little wireless icon in the system tray, which may flash a small bubble announcement when it connects or fails to connect. Floating the mouse pointer over the wireless icon in the system tray on a Windows desktop should show the name of the wireless connection (often a HEX address that looks like alphabet soup if not changed from the default), the speed (54 Mbps for 802.11G), the signal strength, and whether a connection to a router has been established. Note that a connection to a router does not imply a connection to the internet.

Manufacturer provided software can provide a much more accurate picture of relative router distances and signal strength. In some circumstances, especially public networks at hotels, campuses and coffee shops, your laptop may consistently choose to connect to a weak router or access point when stronger signals are available. The manufacturer software usually shows this much clearer than the five green signal strength bars of "View Available Wireless Networks."

Return to Diagnostic Chart

Is the external wireless switch, is so equipped, enabled? When a laptop won't connect to a wireless network, more often than not it's because the wireless adapter is switched off or disabled in software. As with volume controls for computer speakers, wireless networking can be disabled both manually and through software, and in more than one place. Most modern laptops come equipped with an manual slide switch on the front or side of the laptop that turns the wireless adapter on or off. There is is usually an LED associated with the switch that will be lit only when the laptop's wireless capability is on. However, the LED will remain lit even if the wireless has been disabled in software, it is a status indicator for the hardware switch only. The switch can easily be turned off by accident when picking up the laptop or even by a book or other table clutter coming into contact with the side of the notebook, so it's a very common problem.

The easiest place to tell if the laptop wireless adapter has been disabled through software is in Device Manager. One sure sign the adapter is disabled in software (or not operating properly) is if it doesn't appear in the system tray. If your laptop wireless adapter is discrete, a USB or PC card (PCMCIA) plug-in, shut down, make sure it's plugged in firmly, and reboot. Even if the wireless device is designed to be hot-swappable (plugged in while the laptop is turned on) it's better to shut down and do it, since this will give the operating system a chance to reset.
